Lloyds launches recruitment drive for 300 AI specialists

Lloyds Banking Group is recruiting 300 technology specialists as it accelerates the development and deployment of agentic AI across the business.

The new recruits are expected to be in place by September and will join an AI operation of around 1,000 people, including existing Lloyds employees who have been retrained.

Their work will include using AI to identify fraud and scams, search internal documents and create more accessible and personalised digital banking services. Lloyds is using existing models, including Anthropic’s Claude, while adapting public models such as Google’s Gemini to meet its own requirements.

The investment is already producing measurable returns. Lloyds says generative AI delivered a £50m financial benefit last year, with that figure expected to reach £100m this year as its use of agentic AI expands.

However, the group has not ruled out job reductions elsewhere as automation changes how the bank operates. Trystan Davies, Lloyds’ group head of data and AI science, said AI would reshape organisational structures, roles and ways of working.

The announcement captures the tension facing many large employers: AI is creating demand for specialist talent while simultaneously raising difficult questions about the future of existing jobs.
